Lodgpepole pine lumber with Bluestain Fungus - a phenomenon that occurs after mountain pine beetle kills a tree. For years saw mills wouldn't accept bluestained timber, but once mountain pine beetle exploded in the Rockies, and the timber industry was flooded with bluestained wood, they were left with little choice. Luckily, the fungus does not impact the structural integrity of the timber, and it has now become a sought-after aesthetic.

Twice-stabbed lady beetles emerge from their winter larval casings. The beetles are voracious predators of scale insects, like the willow scale covering this aspen tree (all those little specks on the bark along the top of the photo).
